Office furniture maker expanding in Michigan

Saturday 24 May 2008

After two years of operation in the U.S., German office furniture manufacturer O.M.T. -Veyhl, LLC, is expanding with a $4.8 million investment in a new plant and equipment in Holland Michigan \"We have had a really good reception in North America. We started with zero in sales, and this year we are projecting to be at $6 million,\" Operations Manager Dan Shaw said. The company specializes in the design and manufacturer of height-adjustable office desks and tables and manufacturing workstations. \"Our products have an advantage over other adjustable office desks in the market place because they can be ordered with gas (pneumatics), electric power, crank or pin height adjustment,\" Shaw said. The items have a height adjustment range of 27 to 32 inches, depending on what is ordered. The company designs and manufactures for other office furniture companies. Among its designs is the ft2 folding/stacking table, produced for Kimball Office. O.M.T.-Veyhl is a joint venture of the German companies Veyhl GmbH -- a top European office furniture manufacturer -- and O.M.T., a specialist in product coating of high-tech materials from aircraft parts to race cars and medical devices. General Manager Lars Reuter said the company is looking at expanding current business by 300 percent in the next five years, motivating the need to construct the 44,000-square-foot plant in Holland. The firm\'s leased plant at 4430 136th Ave. has about 14,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity. \"We have eight acres at the James Street location and the land to expand the plant up to 145,000 square feet when we need the space,\" Reuter said. The Holland Township Board has approved O.M.T.-Veyhl for a 12-year, 50 percent tax abatement on $1.5 million in construction costs and $3.2 million in new equipment for the plant.
